Im Haller Stadtteil Halle-Neustadt sind Anfang der 1970er Jahre einige imposante Wandbilder entstanden, die auch heute noch erhalten sind. An der Außenfassade des Wohnblocks in der Schieloer Straße, Ecke Harzgeroder Straße errichtete der Künstler Erich Enge das Lenin gewidmete Wandbild „Er rührte an den Schlaf der Welt“.

Diese 1971 eingeweihte Silikatmalerei auf Zementplatten präsentiert drei wesentliche Reformen Lenins in der Sowjetunion: die Beseitigung des Analphabetentums, die Bodenreform und die Elektrifizierung des Landes. Als zentrales Element des Bildes wird Lenin, umgeben von lernenden jungen Menschen, porträtiert. Das Kunstwerk wurde nach der Wende komplett abmontiert, gereinigt und erneut angebracht.

In Halle-Neustadt gibt es noch zwei weitere sozialistische Wandbilder aus den 1970er Jahren. Beide sind vom Künstler José Renau und zeigen futuristische Motive. Eins trägt den langen Titel „Die Einheit der deutschen Arbeiterklasse als Voraussetzung für das Wirksamwerden ihrer Schöpferkraft und Gründung der DDR“ und hat Karl Marx als Hauptfigur, während das andere „Die von Menschen beherrschten Kräfte von Natur und Technik“ heißt und den Aufbau einer modernen sozialistischen Gesellschaft darstellt.

He stirred the sleep of the world

At the beginning of the 1970s, some impressive murals were painted in the Halle-Neustadt district of Halle, which are still preserved today. The artist Erich Enge erected the mural „He stirred the sleep of the world“, dedicated to Lenin, on the outer wall of the building in Schieloer Straße, at the corner of Harzgeroder Straße.

This silicate painting on cement plates, unveiled in 1971, presents three essential reforms of Lenin in the Soviet Union: the elimination of illiteracy, land reform and the electrification of the country. As the central element of the painting, Lenin is portrayed surrounded by young learning people. After the reunification, the work of art was completely dismantled, cleaned and reattached.

In Halle-Neustadt there are two other socialist murals from the 1970s. Both are by the artist José Renau and show futuristic motifs. One bears the long title „The Unity of the German Working Class as a Prerequisite for the Effectiveness of Its Creative Power and the Foundation of the GDR“ and has Karl Marx as its main character, while the other is called „The Man-Dominated Forces of Nature and Technology“ and represents the construction of a modern socialist society.
