In der Kleinstadt Bützow in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern existiert bis heute noch eine Straße mit dem Namen „Leninring”, wo ein dem Gründer der Sowjetunion gewidmeter Gedenkstein vorzufinden ist. Das Denkmal steht etwas verwahrlost vor einem Plattenbau, aber trotzdem scheint der Revolutionsführer von Bedeutung für die Anwohner zu sein. Als die örtliche CDU 2010 eine Namensänderung vorschlug, scheiterte sie nämlich an den Widerstand der Bürger, die sich entschieden dagegen wehrten.

Als Hauptargument für die Initiative nannte die CDU die brutale Unterdrückung der politischen Opposition in Russland nach 1917, für die Lenin verantwortlich sei. Der Erinnerungswert der Figur des kommunistischen Anführers war jedoch stärker als die politischen Argumente der konservativen Partei, sodass das Ergebnis der von der Stadtvertretung im März 2011 organisierten Befragung klar gegen den Plan der CDU ausfiel. Mehr als 60% der Beteiligten lehnten die Namensänderung ab und retteten dadurch auch den Gedenkstein.

Residents save Lenin-monument

In the small city of Bützow in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern there is still a street named “Leninring”, where a commemorative stone dedicated to the founder of the Soviet Union can be found. The monument stands in front of an apartment block with the typical Socialist architecture style and is in bad shape, partially overgrown with moss. But nevertheless the Communist revolutionary still seems to matter to the residents, who in the year 2011 rebelled against a proposal of the local CDU, to change the name of the street (which would also have meant the demolition of the memorial stone).

The main argument of the conservative party to ban Lenin from the city-landscape, was his responsibility in the brutal oppression of the political dissent in Russia after 1917.  But the memorial and symbolic value of the figure of the revolutionary leader was stronger than the political arguments of the CDU, so that the plan of changing the name of “Leninring” was clearly defeated in the referendum organized in March of 2011. More than 60% of the voters rejected the proposal and saved not only the original street name, but also the Lenin-monument.
