A statue, which is under monument protection, but disappears without a trace. An old and forgotten bust, which suddenly is standing at the entrance of the Volkspark. Lenin’s existence in Potsdam is a succession of mysterious incidents and even journalists, politicians and public authorities lose track of it. But let’s analyse these paranormal phenomena closely…

The bust of Lenin placed in the Volkspark is the protagonist of a bizarre story. When in 1994 the Soviet Army left the military complex of Bornstedter Feld in Potsdam, it just abandoned the figure behind. When many years later an exhibition about the military use of the former Soviet complex was planed in the Volkspark, Lenin’s bust was one of the pieces chosen to be part of it. That is why it was placed in the park, where it stayed for four years (2001-2005) among many other authentic pieces of local history.

After the four-years-exhibition all pieces were removed from the park, but for some strange reason the bust of the communist leader was left there. It is not clear, who took the decision, but the fact is that the monument stayed on its spot until 2007, when it had to be transposed due to construction works. The new location chosen for the sculpture was one of the main entrances to the park, so that many visitors, which had never noticed the figure of Lenin in its former rather inconspicuous site, thought that the presence of Lenin in the park was something new. In local newspapers and in social media there was a heated debate about this finding. Even politicians did not know exactly how to explain that a bust of Lenin suddenly appeared in the entrance of one of the most important parks in town.

Though the weird story about the big head made of stone in the park could never be completely clarified, the local politicians have expressed themselves rather calmly and peacefully, since the issue with the statue has already caused troubles enough. And that’s how Lenin is still standing smoothly in the entrance of the Volkspark, serving as a climbing frame for children and as a controversial discussion topic for the adults.

Akte X: Lenin in Potsdam

Eine als Denkmal geschützte Statue, die spurlos verschwindet und deren genauer Verbleib niemand kennt. Eine steinerne Büste, die plötzlich am Eingang des Volksparks auftaucht. Lenins Existenz in Potsdam ist von geheimnisvollen Ereignissen geprägt, bei denen selbst Journalisten, Politiker und Beamte den Überblick verlieren.

Die im Volkspark ausgestellte Büste Lenins sorgt seit Jahren für Verwirrung. Sie ist eine Hinterlassenschaft der bis 1994 im Bornstedter Feld stationierten Gruppe der Sowjetischen Streitkräfte in Deutschland. Im Rahmen einer vierjährigen Ausstellung am Rande des Volksparks wurde sie von 2001 bis 2005 zusammen mit anderen authentischen Stücken ausgestellt, die die militärische Nützung des Geländes in der Vergangenheit verbildlicht haben.

Aus nicht geklärten Gründen wurde die Büste des kommunistischen Führers nach Ende der Ausstellung jedoch nicht entfernt, sondern blieb allein im Park zurück. Wegen Bauarbeiten wurde das Denkmal dann 2007 umgestellt. Als neuer Standort wurde einer der wichtigsten Eingänge zum Volkspark ausgesucht, sodass viele Besucher, welche die Skulptur an ihrem vorherigen eher unauffälligen Standort nicht bemerkt hatten, plötzlich dachten, Lenin sei neu aufgestellt worden. In den Medien und in verschiedenen sozialen Netzwerken sorgte der Fund für große Unruhe und heiße Debatten. Selbst die Potsdamer Politiker konnten sich nicht genau erklären, wie Lenin plötzlich am Eingang von einem der wichtigsten Grünanlagen der Stadt aufgetaucht war.

Bis heute ist die Verantwortung für das Zurückbleiben des steinernen Kopfes und die nachfolgende Umstellung nicht geklärt, aber da man schon mit der verschwundenen Statue genug Ärger hatte, haben sich die verschiedenen Parteien hierzu eher zurückhaltend geäußert. Und so steht Lenin weiterhin friedlich im Grünen und dient Kindern als Klettergerüst und Erwachsenen als brisantes Gesprächsthema.
