Almost exactly 35 years to the day after the last inauguration of a statue of Lenin on German soil (Schwerin, 22.6.1985), a statue of the Soviet revolutionary leader was unveiled in Gelsenkirchen on 20 June 2020. The 1.2-tonne, 2.10-metre-high cast iron sculpture is located in front of the headquarters of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) at the corner of Schmalhorststraße/An der Rennbahn in the district Gelsenkirchen-Horst.
The monument is the work of the sculptor Vladimir Kyn and was erected on 19.12.1957 on the ground of a machine factory in Horovice (Czechoslovakia). A copy of the statue was placed in front of the Skoda Works in Pilsen. These two monuments were the first Lenin statues in Czechoslovakia, but despite their historical value they were dismantled in the early 1990s. The Pilsen statue now stands in the Techmania educational centre (also in Pilsen), while the other work of art ended up in the garage of an Austrian collector. The MLPD discovered this statue by chance and decided to purchase and install it on the occasion of Lenin’s 150th birthday.

However, the operation was not easy: After the establishment parties had complained about the project, the city of Gelsenkirchen prohibited its erection. The official reason given was not political, but rather arguments relating to the protection of historical monuments, such as the original and absurd claim that the Lenin statue would „reduce the monument value of the building“ in front of which it was to be placed. In the end an administrative court had to deal with the case and decided in favour of the MLPD.

And so it came to the festive inauguration of the pearl-grey painted Lenin statue, the only Lenin monument in West Germany. About 800 people enjoyed a varied program on a sunny Saturday with speeches, music and much more. Also „Lenin is still around“ was there: Carlos Gomes gave a short speech on stage and later signed copies of his book „Lenin lebt“ at the stand of the publishing house Neuer Weg.

Fast auf den Tag genau 35 Jahre nach der letzten Einweihung einer Leninstatue auf deutschem Boden (Schwerin, 22.6.1985) wurde am 20. Juni 2020 in Gelsenkirchen erneut ein Standbild des sowjetischen Revolutionsführers enthüllt. Die 1,2 Tonnen schwere und 2,10 Meter hohe Plastik aus Gusseisen befindet sich vor dem Hauptsitz der Marxistisch-Leninistischen Partei Deutschlands (MLPD) an der Ecke Schmalhorststraße/An der Rennbahn im Stadtteil Gelsenkirchen-Horst.

Das Denkmal ist ein Werk des Bildhauers Vladimir Kyn und war am 19.12.1957 auf dem Areal einer Maschinenfabrik in Horovice (Tschechoslowakei) aufgestellt worden. Eine Kopie des Standbilds kam vor die Skoda-Werke in Pilsen. Diese beiden Denkmäler waren die ersten Leninstatuen in der Tschechoslowakei, wurden jedoch trotz ihres historischen Werts Anfang der 1990er Jahre demontiert. Die Pilsener Statue steht jetzt im Bildungszentrum Techmania (auch in Pilsen), während das andere Kunstwerk in der Garage eines österreichischen Sammlers landete. Die MLPD entdeckte zufällig diese Statue und beschloss sie aus Anlass des 150. Geburtstags von Lenin zu erwerben und aufzustellen.

Einfach war die Errichtung allerdings nicht: Nachdem sich die etablierten Parteien über das Vorhaben beschwert hatten, untersagte die Stadt Gelsenkirchen seine Aufstellung. Als offizielle Begründung wurden nicht politische, sondern denkmalschutzrechtliche Argumente genannt, wie etwa die so originelle wie absurde Behauptung, das Lenin-Standbild bewirke eine „Herabsetzung des Denkmalwertes des Gebäudes“, vor dem es sich befinden sollte. Ein Verwaltungsgericht musste sich am Ende mit dem Fall befassen und entschied zugunsten der MLPD.

Und so kam es nun doch zur festlichen Einweihung der perlgrau lackierten Leninstatue, das einzige Lenindenkmal in West-Deutschland. Circa 800 Personen genossen an einem sonnigen Samstag ein abwechlungsreiches Programm mit Reden, Musik und viel mehr. Auch „Lenin is still around“ war vor Ort: Carlos Gomes hielt ein kleines Grußwort auf der Bühne und signierte später Exemplare seines Buchs „Lenin lebt“ am Stand des Verlags Neuer Weg.
