The rising star of Lenin’s socialism is still scintillating in the city of Halle: In the Pestalozzi Park you can find an old monument, which shows Lenin’s head on a star, floating over the earth. Our planet is placed at the top of three books, which contain a formula developed by the Soviet revolutionary: „Soviet power + Electrification = Communism”. It refers to the importance of the process of electrification in the beginning of the 20th century or the economic growth of the entire country. In 1920 the government created the „State Commission for Electrification of Russia“ and in 10 years the production of electricity increased tenfold.

There is also a bronze panel fixed to the big stone block, which serves as a pedestal. It explains that the sculpture was made by the workers of an old pump plant for the 100^th anniversary of Lenin.This information is crucial for the fact, that it is still standing in the park: Since it was an homage from a group of workers to Lenin, but the monument was never given to the city, the issue, referring to its legal property  is unclear, so that neither the town hall, nor any other local or national administration, is allowed to remove it. Therefor it also seems that nobody cares about the maintenance of the old monument, so that it is stained with red ink since a few months. But actually the color red matches quite well with the Soviet star with Lenin’s head. One could think that more than an action of vandalism, it was rather meant to be a tribute to the communist revolution…

UPDATE: In 2018 the star was stolen. Whether it was a simple metal theft or a political action could not be determined. The monument now stands there without Lenin’s portrait. Another loss for the German Lenin monument landscape.

Roter Stern über Halle

Der aufgehende Stern von Lenins Sozialismus funkelt immer noch in der Stadt Halle: Dort kann man im Pestalozzipark das 1970 aufgestellte Denkmal vorfinden, in welchem der Kopf des sowjetischen Revolutionärs auf einem kleinen über der Erde schwebenden Stern zu sehen ist. Der Planet steht auf drei Büchern, auf deren Rücken eine von Lenin entworfene Formel zu lesen ist: „Sowjetmacht + Elektrifiz
ierung = Kommunismus”. Sie entstand zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts und verwies auf die Wichtigkeit der Elektrifizierung für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des gesamten Landes. 1920 formte die Regierung die „Staatliche Kommission für die Elektrifizierung Russlands“ und innerhalb von 10 Jahren wurde die Stromproduktion verzehnfacht.

An dem großen Granitblock, der als Sockel dient, ist eine Gedenktafel befestigt: „Gemeinschaftsarbeit der Modellbauer u. Former des Pumpenwerkes Halle/S. zum 100. Geburtstag von W.I. Lenin”. Als Werk der Arbeiter des Pumpenwerkes Halle/Saale ist die Eigentumsfrage bezüglich dieses Denkmals unklar, sodass es bis heute nicht entfernt werden konnte. Dementsprechend scheint sich auch niemand um die Instandhaltung der alten Skulptur zu kümmern, denn sie ist seit Monaten mit roter Farbe befleckt. Allerdings muss man sagen, dass Rot eigentlich sogar ganz gut zum Sowjetstern mit Lenins Kopf passt. Man könnte glatt denken, bei der vermeintlichen Vandalismusaktion handle es sich vielmehr um eine Ehrung der kommunistischen Revolution…

UPDATE: Im Jahr 2018 wurde der Stern entwendet. Ob es sich dabei um einen einfachen Metalldiebstahl oder um eine politische Aktion handelte, konnte nicht geklärt werden. Das Denkmal steht nun ohne Lenins Portrait da. Ein weiterer Verlust für die deutsche Lenin-Denkmallandschaft.
