A Berlin tourist guide once told me, that the first place he visited with his groups from the USA was the Soviet War Memorial: “So they can see, that in Berlin they can to expect the unexpectable!” In fact, from a Western perspective the monument is quite disconcerting or even a little bit bizarre: The nationalistic pathos and the communist symbolism create a flourishing tribute to Soviet patriotism, which many would not expect to find in the heart of Europe in the 21th Century.

The monument has a total area of 93 000 m² and was built between 1946 and 1949, serving as a war cemetery for over 7.000 Soldiers of the Red Army, who died during the conquest of Berlin. The complex includes different sculptural elements, which remind the suffering of the Soviet population and the victory against Germany: a stone statue of the weeping Motherland, a central portal of red granite with two kneeling bronze-soldiers, 16 white sarcophagi and on top a small hill on the eastern part the central figure of the “liberator”, a 12 meter high bronze-statue of a Soviet soldier standing on a broken swastika and carrying a helpless child in his arms.

The presence of a figure of Lenin around here is definitely no big surprise: The communist revolutionary can be found at the white sarcophagi with quotes of Josef Stalin and relief carvings showing different aspects of World War II. One of the images shows him as the spiritual leader of a group of soldiers pointing with their guns. Lenin in white, that is impressive and has a strong symbolic connotation: purity and peacefulness.

In opposition to most of the other figures of him, no one demands the removal of this humble Lenin. The fact is that the whole monument is under protection of the German-Russian treaty on the War Grave Commission, which obliges the German state to maintain this oasis of Soviet national pride in the middle of Berlin. And also the white Lenin will be able to carry on with his existence, as secure and in no other place in Germany!

Der weiße Lenin

Ein Berliner Touristenführer erklärte mir mal, er würde seine Gruppen von US-amerikanischen Besuchern als Allererstes zum Sowjetischen Ehrenmal bringen: „Damit sie sehen, dass man in Berlin das Unerwartbare erwarten kann.“ Tatsächlich ist die Gedenkstätte im Treptower Park aus westlicher Sicht befremdend, wenn nicht sogar ein bisschen bizarr: Das nationalistische Pathos und die kommunistische Symbolik entfalten sich mit großer Pracht und bilden ein Monument der Huldigung des sowjetischen Patriotismus, wie manch einer es im Herzen Europas am Anfang des XXI. Jahrhunderts vielleicht nicht mehr erwartet hätte.

Das 93 000 m² große Ehrenmal wurde zwischen 1946 und 1949 erbaut und dient als Kriegsgräberstätte für mehr als 7000 in der Eroberung Berlins gefallene Rotarmisten. Zur Anlage gehören verschiedene Bildwerke, die an das Leiden der sowjetischen Bevölkerung und an den Sieg über Deutschland erinnern: eine Steinstatue der trauernden Mutter Heimat, ein Mittelportal mit zwei knieenden Bronzesoldaten, 16 weiße Sarkophage und auf dem Hügel am östlichsten Teil der Anlage die zentrale Figur des „Befreiers“, eine 12 Meter hohe Bronzeskulptur eines sowjetischen Soldaten, der auf einem zerstörten Hakenkreuz steht und ein kleines Kind auf dem Arm hält.

Dass man an diesem Ort Lenin begegnet, ist keine Überraschung. Die Besucher finden ihn an den mit Zitaten von Josef Stalin verzierten Sarkophagen aus weißem Marmor, welche anhand von Reliefbildern verschiedene Aspekte des „Großen Vaterländischen Krieges“ darstellen. Ein Bild zeigt ihn als spirituellen Anführer einer Reihe mit Gewehr bewaffneter Rotarmisten. Lenin ganz in weiß, das beeindruckt und hat eine starke symbolische Konnotation: Reinheit und Friedlichkeit.

Auf die Idee, diesen edelmütigen Lenin entfernen zu wollen kommt keiner. Schließlich steht die Gedenkstätte unter Schutz des 1992 unterzeichneten Abkommens über Kriegsgräberfürsorge, was bedeutet, dass man um die Existenz dieser Oase des sowjetischen Nationalstolzes in Berlin nicht bangen muss. Und so wird auch der weiße Lenin weiterleben, so sicher und wohl gepflegt wie sonst nirgends in Deutschland!
